Early Monsoon Sunset

The reference photo was taken in early July from my back yard as the sun lit up some stormy clouds. The tree is a weedy Siberian Elm, which grow exuberantly across our desert landscapes. I have a horrible overall view of the properties behind our house, so I chose to crop the photo and concentrate on the yellow for my painting. It finally gave me an opportunity to use some Chrome Yellow, which I have from my mother's old tubes of paint. I mixed my dark leaves and branches from some oddball colors that came together: Burnt Umber, Schmincke Haze Blue, Perelene Green and Quinacriidone Magenta and Ivory Black. I did a final glaze of very dilute magenta with an almost dry brush in places. The painting is on 7" X10" Daler Rowney Prestige paper, which is rough but not lumpy like some other brands. The photo of the painting does not reveal the true glorious glow of the yellow, but I think viewers will get the idea of it.
