Late November Thunderstorm
I was driving home in the late afternoon in November when this sudden thunderstorm blew in. When I saw the rainbow appear behind sheets of rain ahead of me, I immediately stopped the car and took photos with my cell phone because it was so dramatic. I knew immediately that I had to paint this scene somehow. It took me four tries to get the order of washes right and to dilute the very intense colors of the rainbow. I turned the paper sideways while painting the bow because it is easier to paint across than up and down. I like the tension between the storm and the bow. The storm never reached me as it swept across the foothills of the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, New Mexico, so I could stand back and admire all of the drama. As an aside, I find that taking pix with my phone captures an elusive and immediate scene, that I can use to make a drawing or painting. So, I am still using my own images as a guide.
