Greek Chapel
This painting shows a small chapel on Spartia Beach in Kefalonia. I was there in June but didn't have time to paint as we had to clear out my mother's house. So I just took a few quick photos, but I regret I didn't do any sketches, they would have been helpful for the studio work.
Since I've been doing composition a lot lately, I wanted to work out a good composition for this painting from the various photographs. The photo at dawn served as a basis, but there was a lack of light and shadow. Also, in my opinion, the chapel was too dominant. After a few sketches and color studies, a picture was created that no longer corresponds to reality....
When creating the image, I asked myself how much I could change for a good composition without changing the main subject. In hindsight I realized that it wasn't a good idea to change prominent buildings or mountains because the viewer who knows the subject would say: "Something's wrong." Perhaps I should have darkened the shadows in the foreground even more since the middle tones are predominant in the painting. "To put more drama in it" as Olly would say...😀
But all in all I'm very satisfied with the development process and also with the result ☺️. I learned a lot - and it was a lot of fun.
