Boats in the harbour - my first 'commission'
My mother-in-law asked me to make a painting for her 80th birthday. For a number of years along with my father-in-law they rented an apartment in Scheveningen harbour - the third floor one just above the main reflection on the end of the lefthand block. Since my father-in-law became infirm and confined to his wheelchair she wanted an painting to remember these times.
It was a challenge to find a view of the harbour that placed their apartment central. This proved the best spot, so I took several photos. The soft hazy afternoon light helps to homogenise the busy mass of boats and the key reflection along with the two foreground vessels point towards the apartment in a subtle way. The painting follows the photo pretty much completely although I did omit a few ropes in the foreground as they interfered with the movement of the eye up the reflection. Their apartment has a similar colour palette, with all images in black frames so I hope this will fit in nicely. Arches 600gm CP (thick sheet 30 x 40 cm) . Comments welcome.

The palette and detail work wonderfully together. I'm sure your inlaws are very pleased with this wonderful memento.
