Overworked paper

Hello! New to the forum, can anyone give some advice. I think I may have overworked my watercolor paper as after adding multiple layers of paint the last layer only seem to lift all of the previous layers and not create a new one. Is there a way to avoid this? are there any signs that I am getting to the point of overworking it? Anything Helps! ( it isn’t supposed to be pretty just trying to better understand the medium )

Hi Starr, I'm not familiar with your block of paper. But, if it is a cellulose papers rather than 100% cotton you have already found their limitations. When I am painting on a cellulose paper I have to ensure that each layer is absolutely dry before I paint the next layer and it will only accept a certain number of layers of watercolour. Depending on the paper sometimes the brush I use can also lift the paper if it is too stiff. It just becomes harder to work on your technique and build skills when you have to modify how you paint depending on the type of paper. Now I use 100% cotton paper (expensive I know) and if I mess up I paint on the other side.
