Student vs Artist paint quality

Artist grade paint is obviously more expensive than student grade paint.

But when do I realy need artist quality paint to obtain good paintings?

In other words, when and how big, and how important, is the difference?

I started experimenting with both paint qualities and mixed all possible combinations of quality.

(artist+artist, artist+student, student+artist and student+student.)

I mixed a grey colour with French Ultramarine and Burned Sienna. (both Winsor & Newton)

I also painted twice with the same mix: wet on damp and wet on wet.

From this test I can see that there is less granulation when using an Artist+Artist mix in wet on wet technique.

If this is important then Artist paint is the way to go.

No doubt there are a lot more differences to discover.

More tips and advice about testing paint quaity?

greetings

Jo

While burnt and raw sienna must be made original from PBR7

But W&N and Daler Rowney make it both from pr101.

On the end of the game is, can you paint with it? If the colour is right for you, it will be okay. Daler uses a lot of hues in his professional serie, and yet Oliver makes beautiful work with them.
