The Winter Lane 40cm x 30cm
Well, it doesn't happen often, but of course it was going to happen one day after filming my 2022 Christmas video the day before; snow in Sussex! But there's always an opportunity to paint these moments at a later date and it's nice to go back to old moments and memories and I always encourage my followers and students to paint the landscape places and moments that have inspired them - not the reference images or paintings made by other artists.
I'm pleased with how this painting turned out - it's never easy painting and filming at the same time - but it really captures my feelings and experience in the wintery lane. Landscape painting is a wonderful way to recreate moments like this. On reflection, I would probably make the main tree's broken-brush areas a shade or two darker on the right-hand side, but to add another wash over that area would reduce the sense of freshness and immediacy in the painting, I think, so I'm happy to leave it as it stands.
I hope you can find time to fit in some painting and sketching over the holiday break. Enjoy your painting - feel free to post your results on here (any season is good, not just winter scenes) - and I look forward to discussing them with you. Merry Christmas!
I;m a beginner painter and new to your channel but I love your stuff! It was like magic watching the washes you put down in colors become white snow! I hope I can learn more of making things look how I want. Thanks!
It was good to watch you doing this painting on your youtube channel. I love the atmosphere it creates and the trees are just brilliant . Lovely Oliver.
The skill to do foreground in a warm grey colour, that looked too dark when you applied the wash.
But your experience how dark a wash must be is stunning. It was spot on.
Was perfect, and nice to watch how you gave those trees a podium.
