Sunset over my tram stop

I get some incredible sunsets here on the coast in The Hague. The sky was on fire the evening I took this photo. I love painting the buildings and the street scene with the lights and shadows. I use masking fluid for the lights and then I blur the edges with a damp flat synthetic and some tissue. Hot press saunders waterford, interesting colour - smalt (dumonts blue) which is a more purplely ultramarine.

I love the way you incorporate so much dark value into your paintings but still keep the luminous glow. My attempts to create dark values often leads to ‘mud’ because I mix too many complements together. Your work shows me that large areas of dark value can be handled effectively.
