Help! Latest Painting

I'm sorry this is so big!! This was a quick painting done in the car, on a passport size journal of Arches paper. I feel like my paintings look almost cartoon like. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? It is scary to post this. I'm not on the same level as many of you all. Thanks for any help or direction. Blessings, Betty

I am a palette junkie. There are lightweight plastic palettes that have decent mixing space. A really common one is below in a photo. But they often don’t close well and feel flimsy to me. Or they stick after paint has been flung around. The one I see most commonly has small, flat wells. See the photo—you can find it at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. I like the Mijello because the wells are deeper and slanted, which are better for brushes; and it has a rubber lip around it. It also has a clear tray for more wash space. I think the idea is that if you want to color match or compare, you can mix something and then hold the tray over your painting to see how it looks. Another travel palette I use is metal. Look up Meeden on Amazon. I like the small one best for its size and portability. It’s easy to hold in one hand while painting with the other. The wings that fold out provide mixing space. I’m not crazy about mixing washes on it, though, because a good part of it is simply a flat sheet with no sides.

The best place to buy a Bettix bottle is also probably Amazon. They are used in measuring chemicals and fuels, so they are available perhaps at a Farm and Country type store, but most businesses buy them in bulk from a supplier. Amazon offers them one at a time WITH caps. My husband uses them in his work as an entomologist at a university. That’s how I learned about them.
