Final campsite sketch

It’s the last day of our short break and I’ve tried one last sketch. It‘s been a glorious day but autumn is definitely in the air, especially towards the end of the day.

This was kind of en plein air, but not really as I was in the campervan looking both at the photo, and the view out of the window (the temp is dropping and I was getting cold outside!). I did feel a lot more relaxed than when I was trying to paint outside.

In the earlier sketches, I was trying to tonally match the group of trees on the horizon, but I think this was making them too dominant. I think these muted trees work to put them in the distance but don’t represent what I was actually seeing.

I’m not keen on the hedge. That is, I quite like the softness, and I don’t think I’ve made it look too uniform, but really don’t like the colours as they look sludgy.

Please let me know what has worked and what hasn’t, I’m keen to learn so I can keep improving :)
