Heritage

This is a stone chariot temple from Hampi, India that was built in the 16th century

I wanted to paint this monument  for a while but did not have the skills to simplify and still paint it well. After I saw this picture from the photographer (https://www.instagram.com/anupgandhe/) I realized that making into a landscape painting might be a good idea. I asked permission from the author to use the reference but made several changes to the design including sky, light and shadows etc

The sky serves two purposes - balance the color and the rigid shapes of rocks. The clouds of the summer sky were designed to accentuate the subject and also serve as leading lines and diagonals balancing the perceptive of the subject. Thanks to Ollie for teaching these techniques in the YT videos

For the chariot, I focussed on lights and shadows and line and big shapes. This helped to capture the essence without having to paint minute details. I wanted to capture light falling on the side of the wheels with the front side in shade. This is not a natural angle as the sun rises or sets in the front or back

Colors used:

Cerulean and Cobalt blue - Sky and mixing shadows

RawSienna, Burst Sienna, Burnt Umber -

Lemon Yellow and Permanent Pink - for the layer capturing the light

Beautiful painting Prasad. You simplified the motif very well and you did a good job of the sky. In order to bring more harmony into the painting, it is advantageous to use some color from the sky even below the horizon (e.g. in the foreground) and vice versa, a yellowish tone in the sky, e.g. on the horizon.
