Limited palette journey

I went on a bit of a journey with this one. When I saw the reference photo, I had a strong idea in my head of what I wanted the final scene to look like, and went through several iterations to get there, which I have also posted below.

The first was just playing around with the colours to see what would work, and I also did a sketch to figure out how to improve the perspective and get a feeling of distance. One thing I wish I’d done differently in the final painting was position the pile in a different place in the composition. But it is kind of approaching what I had in my mind’s eye after seeing the original photo!

Well it's been a mad few days (well, weeks) at work and I haven't had chance to paint or look at the forum since this post. I can see there's lots of new painting posts for me to catch up on!

Interesting that most of you preferred the second to last version! I think sometimes I get quite blinkered and find it hard to look at what I've done objectively. I found the last one more crisp, which I liked, but it is interesting to hear all your thoughts on the atmosphere in the other one!

Thanks for taking the time to comment and give me your thoughts :)
