Vulture Kettle

When I was taking up watercolor a few years ago, I was inspired by this large kettle of Turkey Vultures lazily circling over their evening roost at Clayton Lake State Park in New Mexico. I started wet and went for the late afternoon clods against an vivid blue July sky. When I took the painting's photo, I had not yet flattened it, I used W-N paint on a piece of 50+ year old Whatman paper. The paint goes onto the paper like a dream, and even though I didn't know as much about technique as I do now, I was pleased with the quirky result. If you look closely, you can see the tiny, red heads on the birds. The foliage on the tree is rather muddled, but...of well.
