Practice idea
I kid myself when I say practice. I'm very unlikely to paint a masterpiece, so everything is practice 🤣. I wanted to learn to paint water better as it appears in a lot of my subjects. I have some instruction from Joe Francis Dowden, so my practice ideas were loosely based off that article and concepts that Olly has brought up. I sectioned off a half sheet of rough paper into four paintings. Originally, I was going to paint the same scene four times. But then it occurred to me, this was a chance to practice more than just water. So I drew four scenes basically the same. I put in different washes for each sky to vary the mood and get some sky practice in. I did the same with the landscape, being able to do wet in wet, distant trees, dry brush for near trees. I got to the water and the underwater rocks and made different passes at this part. It was fun, and I did not feel like I was repetitiously repeating the same scene. They all have varying degrees of success. I did find some concepts easier to execute than others, which I will try to incorporate into future pieces. Here are each of the four scenes.

Great idea Thomas, and well executed. I think the fact that you said it was fun was the main factor. That probably meant you were more relaxed than usual, allowing you to achieve more. Very often, I feel it is apprehension rather than technique that holds us back. Which is why our rough sketches often outshine the finished work.
