Winter walk in Den Bosch

I visited the very beautiful city of Den Bosch in the Netherlands last week. The historic walled defences of the city look out over a vast series of fields. The moat below was semi frozen. I was struck by the characterful trees that have grown above the walls, especially this really craggy tree overhanging the side. I took this photo contrasting it with the scale of the wall.

Luckily two walkers appeared just at the right time to give the image some scale and a focal point. The main colours are paynes grey blueish, raw sienna and neutral tint. I used a couple of different sized riggers (2 and 0 ) for the branches.

I enjoy painting contre-jour like this. It unifies everything.
