Outdoors on a Greek island

I recently spent some time painting on the Greek island of Kefalonia and I planned to only paint outside there. I just wanted to paint little sketches to practice simplification. It was a good decision, I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun.

When painting, I noticed that I have a tendency towards cool colours and that I use them even when the surroundings are warmer tones. That's why I often end up adding a thin glaze of warmer colour over certain parts of the painting. Recognizing the temperature of the surroundings and mixing the matching colour requires therefore more practice!

Boats were the biggest challenge for me, mainly the perspective. I know, boats are actually nothing more than rectangular boxes lying on a flat surface - but that's the theory. When I sit in a harbour with all the boats in different shapes and different positions, which also have the nerve to move - then the theory is over...😂

Heidi, Your sketches are quite nice and capture the feel of the islands. I especially like the loose quality while conveying the essence of the place; something I need to work on.
