Lake District

So, feeling brave (temporarily). This painting is based on a tutorial by Geoff Kersey (Geoff has no problem with students posting their work on other sites, providing he is acknowledged). I should say though that Geoff’s version is not overworked or muddy, and his rocks glow with colour and light. This painting typifies the kind of problems I always create for myself - too detailed, obsession with replicating the reference photo exactly and consequently overworked. I’m also guilty of not waiting for layers to dry before detailing - the rocks show clear evidence of this. I do admire realism but would like to strike a balance between realism and the beauty of a spontaneous, uncluttered painting. Any advice most welcome. I know that the site rules have requested that we not post large size photos, but I don’t know how to alter this from ‘actual size.’ Painted on Arches CP block, 23 x 31cm.

Thank you for sharing the lovely painting, Jeanette. The headland is so warm and inviting. The trees are glorious - you must have attended a lot of boring meetings :)

Re. copying others work. I believe that painting is like a golf swing. You can glean pointers from the swings of the professionals, but to try and copy them is very often counter productive. Each of us has our own natural golf swing within us, that must emerge during the learning process if we are to 'succeed'. I believe painting is much the same.
