Old Faithful

ree
This was painted from a screenshot of an eruption of Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park on January 16, 2007. According to the caption on the printout, it was -4.0 degrees C at 3:42 in the afternoon. I painted it as an exercise in black/white patterns, with added values for a class called Foundation and Intent. After 3 previous sessions we were allowed to use color after only using black and white markings.

The Lunar black is just a normal black, but not even halfway ready in process from manufacturing. They grind the pigment in a callander, and you can measure how fine it is with a special tool. Rex Brandt made a excellent lesson in his days, that is very good to make your painting in. It is called the three wash plan, with the first wash you preserve the whites, the second was you make the form, the third wash is to give the watercolour its punch

The book is very old, so in B&W. But if you study the techniques behind it you can come a long way with Old Faithful
