Top of the Ridge

Painting of a crop of trees on the ridge of a hill.

Trying to keep to a minimal palette (Ultramarine/ Yellow Ochre/Alizarin Crimson plus Buff Titanium and Neutral Tint). Struggled with laying in the trunks of trees which are are a grey and sometimes almost white in sunlight. So I resorted to Buff Titanium and neutral tint so that I could paint over the background. Interested in suggestions from the forum. Would it of been better to mask in the trunks or just paint them a darker colour?

Hi John,

Very nice, I like your trees and the sky.

As to the light trunks, how about lifting the color where the trunks are to preserve the white of the paper? Would that work instead of masking fluid? Or if the lower tree trunks are in shadow can you paint them darker without losing your intended vision. I think Olly does this and he seems to mostly have one side of the trunks highlighted and the opposite side he paints darker because its in shadow. Hope this is useful?
