As there is some interest in the forum on tonal sketches, decided to do a pencil drawing of these old cottages in the Hartley Valley NSW. The character of the brick and weatherboard buildings and their various additions, and the overgrown fruit trees, created some interesting textures, but the main interest was in the contours of the chimneys and the light shapes of the roofs against the darker tones of the bush behind. Although only a tonal sketch, it tells the story of this landscape, and illustrates the importance of tone over colour. A4 cartridge paper sketchbook, 2B, 4B lead pencils. All comments welcome.
