Outwood Windmill
Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I painted this on a recent beautiful November morning with a local plein air group. Most artists in the group use oil but I soldier on with watercolour. The technique I use may be out of place for this forum - I'm not sure. I've always liked drawing so I use a grey fineliner to map out the outlines. This can look like pencil but is permament. I've used masking fluid on the sails. Then I put the main washes in and finished off with fine brushes and a nib. The nib was sold as a Manga style dipping pen but I place watercolour in it with a brush to get the fine lines and mix watercolour with white goache for highlights.
Outwood Windmill was one of the oldest working mills in the UK until recently (I don't think its able to operate now). The thick hedge surrounding it makes it tricky to get an interesting composition but the owner had left the gate open so I thought this would be a good focal point.

Many thanks Edo, your comments mean a lot to me. I agree that these are difficult subjects, especially plein air but I love tackling tricky scenes.
