Is line a cul-de-sac?

Over time I've developed a method for tackling tricky subjects on location with the use of line and watercolour. Like this scene of the water fountain at Cranleigh. However, I'm gettting comments of: urban sketch, illustrative and even 'painting by numbers'. There is a side of me that would like to plan a journey to the foothills of Fine Art. Does this mean I need to ditch the line element? Are there artists who are using line successfully?

Perhaps the comments are aimed at the lack of happy accidents in the painting that generally result from watercolor. If that is so then it is the commenters expectation. Sometimes there is value in conforming to other’s expectations and sometime there is not. Self examination as to what your aspirations with painting is required. Examine what you hope to achieve from entering contests.
