Cranes and clouds over Utrecht

While waiting for the tram I was blown away by this vivid cloud formation above me, nothing vague about it whatsoever. I also liked the way it fell in relation to the cranes and busy construction in the area creating a lovely sweeping diagonal, with the light reflected back in the right hand tower.

I painted the sky first completely and then over painted all the buildings, using a ruler and a flat ended brush extensively. This is also my first painting on Millford by St Cuthberts Mill, a completely different beast to Arches. It holds the water longer, not sure if I prefer it, but i,m following Edo's advice and trying different things out.

There’s so much to like about this Paul and well done for your handling of Millford. It’s not an easy paper to get used to but when you do it’s an absolute gem. One thing to think about - the detail on the right hand building is dominating. Its position is important to keep the eye in the scene, but with a lighter touch on the detail and the tonal contrast then more emphasis would fall on highlights and shadows in the clouds, which you’ve handled superbly.
