Imaginary or real?

At the moment I am practicing technique doing imaginary landscapes. Here's one from I did yesterday. In my head I mainly see vague memories of the South of France because of so many happy holidays. What do people think of this way of practising landscapes as opposed to a real scene sketched or from a photo? I wonder if it means missing the details of form and light and becomes a bit simplistic?

No I didn't. And that's why the painting looks unplanned. Thank you for reminding me Edo.....always sketch first!
