The Church of St Nicholas, Uphill
This Norman / 14th century church sits on top of the hill at Uphill on the southern flank of Weston-s-Mare. The nave roof was decided to be unsafe in the 19th century and removed, though the tower and chancel are intact and still used. The other feature is the remains of a windmill, now used to hold a ceremonial beacon. The overgrown quarry below the church is I believe Roman in origin. From the windmill tower Glastonbury Tor can be seen - another hill with a ruined church.
I have tried to paint this hill several times with little success. There is a rather good salt marsh below the hill though painting that, then the hill and then the sky just makes for another picture of three horizontal parts - something I am prone to and am trying to avoid! So I opted for the sky with the hill at the bottom. Not sure whether it worked though. This is painted on Arches cold pressed which I have only used a few times and to be honest am not entirely happy with. I am more used to Arches rough and can't get the water to behave itself on the cold pressed paper. Comments and advice on the picture or on using cold pressed paper (after being use to rough) always welcome.
