A couple off the coast path

Hello all,

A small summer scene from our summer holiday in Cornwall, and my first original contribution to the forum. My wife and I walked the coast path from Penzance to Falmouth over a period of 7 days (highly recommended). A mile or so before entering Coverack, we took a wrong turn and ended up in a beautiful sculpture park, where we came upon this other "couple". Felt a bit like we had been frozen in time! The sculptures were made by the late Terence Coventry, who passed in 2017.

Seemingly quite a simple scene, but I struggled a lot with it, especially the grasses and foliage. I almost found the sculpture the easiest bit! Played around with masking fluid and tried to scrape out some highlights after I was finished with it. The colour palette is simple, only ultramarine, raw/burnt umber, raw/burnt sienna and hooker's green, maybe some yellow ochre in there as well. The main goal for this painting was just to try out different techniques I've come upon in tutorials, in books etc, and a pleasant summer memory as my subject. (Saunders Waterford block, cold press, 12"x9")

Pleased with the whispy clouds in the sky, but I'm still way too heavy handed, too generous with the paint, in general. Ah, well. Would love to hear your comments. I can take any kind! :)

(Reference photo below - not quite sure if that's a copyright breach because of the sculptures. Let me know, and I'll remove it asap.)

YES, Edo! I tried watercolor for a while back in the nineties from library books. No videos. I thought I did ok. I could make a copy of someone's painting but there was a lot missing. Now I've come back to it for a couple years but don't feel I'm having much success. I watch lots of videos and have gotten quite confused. Years ago I never knew there was so much water involved! Or layers! I hear people speak of 26 layers. I don't follow the tutorials as they fell too confining or require to much patience. So I guess I've lowered my expectations to: "I'm just practicing". I did practice while watching Ollys' videos and that's been some of my best learning. Trees. Distant trees. AND your paintings are amazing!
