McGregor Road Farm
This is a scene from a back road way I drive to drop of my tax info to my CPA every year. The road twists and turns and part of it there are no fences by the road. Just open to where there are cows and goats walking across the road. I've always loved this drive every year. This was a quick plein air sketch I hope to turn into a full on studio painting next month. I really struggle with everything drying too fast when I'm outdoors. I'm struggling with not achieving a clean look. Added a second go at it. The second try is on top.
I know I need to completely start over and work out a tonal study plan etc.. But here is the the scene on top with some added darks.

It just looks clunky. Any advice is welcome.

Art, you have been given some great advice from the others. You have the foundation in these sketches for some great paintings, actually two good ones. I'm partial to the first sketch myself.
My advice, as the others have said, is be brave! Go for it! It's only paper, and you can turn the sheet over and do it gain, taking what you learn from the first side's attempt. Do them three times to get over the contrast hump if you need to. I think perhaps making some tonal sketches to plan out your darks would help you to be braver.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with these 😊
