View of White Mesa

White Mesa is located in San Ysidro, New Mexico. This view was painted from a photo taken from a location where U.S. 550 can't be seen where it passes the formation. The red sandstone rock is the Jurassic Entrada Formation (made famous by Georgia O'Keefe) and the lighter caprock is the late Jurassic Todilto, which is mainly comprised of gypsum.

I painted it on Saunders Waterford rough paper. I's like to note that the red I used was Marmeri Blu "Dragon's Blood", which was a good match for the rock color. This color, mixed with "Faience Blue" made a strong, warm gray shade for shadows.

I often use faience blue (Schmincke) in my flower paintings for the darkest tones. But I have to be careful with it; it's very opaque. But with plenty of water, it produces a beautiful dark blue.
