Last Pole Standing

I’ve been working on skies … particularly puffy clouds. I did this picture from a reference photo I took about a week ago. The sun is starting to feel like spring but the trees are still bare. The location has a landscape of meadows and patches of trees that is now a preserved green space used for walkers and birders. From 1929-1975 it was a major telecommunications site for ATT. Telephone calls from the US to Europe were transmitted by short wave radio using antennae held up by thousands of 80-120 ft poles arrayed toward major cities like London. When coaxial cable was put down across the Atlantic in the 1950’s, the new technology supplanted this site. Now of course, satellite transmission allows us to make calls with our mobile phones anytime with ease. This pole was left as a reminder of times past.

Regarding the picture, any suggestions on how one attacks puffy clouds would be welcome.

Thanks. I‘m finding it hard to capture the powerful feeling of these large clouds without making them appear ’pasted on’ as an afterthought.
