Greek Chapel
This painting shows a small chapel on Spartia Beach in Kefalonia. I was there in June but didn't have time to paint as we had to clear out my mother's house. So I just took a few quick photos, but I regret I didn't do any sketches, they would have been helpful for the studio work.
Since I've been doing composition a lot lately, I wanted to work out a good composition for this painting from the various photographs. The photo at dawn served as a basis, but there was a lack of light and shadow. Also, in my opinion, the chapel was too dominant. After a few sketches and color studies, a picture was created that no longer corresponds to reality....
When creating the image, I asked myself how much I could change for a good composition without changing the main subject. In hindsight I realized that it wasn't a good idea to change prominent buildings or mountains because the viewer who knows the subject would say: "Something's wrong." Perhaps I should have darkened the shadows in the foreground even more since the middle tones are predominant in the painting. "To put more drama in it" as Olly would say...π
But all in all I'm very satisfied with the development process and also with the result βΊοΈ. I learned a lot - and it was a lot of fun.
