On the edge of the night
I'm really drawn to painting the end of the day when things become a little mysterious. I like here the contrast between the street on the edge of the city with the woodland and dunes. The photo is actually taken from where i parked my bike, so it was my last photo before going home. The sun is having its final moments behind the trees. I discovered a colour thats been sitting in my box for ages unused - Yellow Ochre light by W&N. Ive been using tubes and tubes of raw sienna for years, not touching this as its semi opaque and I was unsure about it, but mixing it with paynes grey and a little rose madder made this lovely brown colour. I think the sun is lemon yellow and the sky cerulean with rose madder, cant quite remember, but I like how it turned out. The birds are of course disguising two little drips of paint that splattered when I painted the treeline, however im glad they did as it adds movement and scale. The lights are done with masking fluid, then blurred with a small damp flat synthetic brush (has to be a little stiff) and dabbed with tissue.

Wonderful, Paul! I love the soft blending of darkening sky and fading sunlight. Great trees and the lights are very creative and they tie the whole scene together. Just great! Congrats!
