Boulder by the sea (aka The Giant Seal Pup)
I am fully aware that we have some rock afficionados here, and I am dying to hear what you make of my latest effort. My aim was to simplify, concentrating on the big shapes, but as usual I find it hard not to fiddle. I am currently experimenting with Khadi paper, which is quite different from other papers. It really sucks in water, which makes it fun to paint wet-in-wet. I was amazed how easy that was on this paper. Being handmade it is buckling already when dry, but gets very nice when wet. I know Hazel Soan uses this paper when painting wildlife on the South African savannah, needing the paper to stay wet in the heat.
No problem with the paper, it was the boulder I was after. Left behind by the great ice, it has been laying there quietly for thousands of years. I like the view towards the sea with the wind pump. That one was used by the stone masons when there was a line of open quarries out here, it is now renovated and put back in place.

Update: Following the exellent advice from my fellow rock artists (thank you @Grainne, @Paul Oram, @Marco and @Jon) I have put some more fiddeling into this image. I also took more care with the digitalisation, trying to get rid of the annoying red tinge I tend to get when photographing paintings. Hope this version will look more like a boulder. I also took the chance to fiddle a bit with the background....
