Black Crow

Black Crow - I love watching these birds in the dunes, Corvids are so smart. I wanted to show how composed and still the crow was by centering it in the composition and by contrasting it with the movement of the sand and grasses all around. I will look for more opportunities to paint these birds.

This is painted on Fabriano 50% cotton. This paper isnt so expensive so I tend to be more relaxed with it. You can really play with the paint on it so I tend to switch my brain off and just go for it with no real idea of how it may end up. So no initial sketch at all, just dive straight in. I may try another with a more planned approach, but I do like the overall sense of movement.

A strong painting, lovely colours. I share your love for crows and ravens, you really made this one proud. There is a great sense of movement here, as you say, accented by the crow sitting proud on his fence post. The creepy green tentacles at the bottom strengthen the focus on the crow. Just wonder - did you use some gouache for some of the grass higher up?
