Mt. Holmes
I have been continuing with my outdoor painting. The other day, I stopped in the Gibbon Meadows and did this sketch of Mount Holmes in Yellowstone.

I decided I liked it enough that I would tackle a larger size. I did not take a reference photograph, so I had to rely on memory (not really, I have been here 100 times) and my sketch.
I went 26cm x 36cm Arches 140 pound rough. I use Schmincke paints and for this piece I chose Ultramarine Finest for minimal granulation.
What I find most interesting about the sketching process is that it gives me insight into what not to do! I seem to learn more about what will not work, than I learn what will work. Being a hack painter, I suppose that is to be expected.
I struggled with the foreground on this one until I realized I had two perspectives going. The right side was close and the left side was distant. I seem to have resolved that. The sharp edges to the shadows is something I thought I might try and see how it went.

I will be very interested to hear what you think.

Thomas, I like both pictures but I have to agree with Marion that the colours and tones work better in your initial field sketch. The mountains in the first also, being paler give a much better sense of distance. Having said that I like the foreground in your finished picture. Thanks for sharing both though.
