Bland Bay

I'm still working on my Whangaruru painting, drawn up but not started! This is another of the same area done on a full sheet of Fabriano Artistico cold press. The sky, distant land and sea were done wet in wet. The land was more a case of dropping in the pigment. I did reserve some areas of white paper in the wave area with masking fluid. Must admit I hate using the stuff and find it difficult to get a subtle result

. In the end I removed most of it and came back in later with white gouche to get the tops of the waves etc. I may have gone too lively in the land mass as it does pull your eye up that way but I also think that maybe the brightness in the sky to the left pulls your eye across and then down through the middle of the waves and to the kayaker. That was the plan anyway. The Bay has a terrible name as it is anything but bland and even though the weather was not great for this particular holiday we were still able to do many activities.

Thanks everyone for your input and yes I can see what you all mean about the horizon but looking at the painting and my picture of it, I can see that it's the way I've taken the photo!!!!! Lucky for me😅. I have found the source photo of my husband in the kayak and he was not that close but as you can see I took liberties with the surroundings as of course they would not have translated so well. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.
