Sunrise, Mt Sheridan
A 6”x12” sketch on Arches rough. Sennelier paints.
I did this sketch to practice for a painting. This was a sunrise last summer, where I particularly liked the sky colors and shapes. Minutes later, the clouds were gone and just a basic blue sky.
As the American artist Ogden Pleissner once remarked “lots of times the sketch is better than the painting”. I fear that may be the case with this one.

I know that feeling. Happens to me more than I’d like. Sketches turn out great and I get excited only to have the painting disappoint. No real need for disappointment here though. Every painting is good for learning. Some great use of colour here to set the mood.
