Diabase Boulders
The reference photo was taken while hiking in the Sourland Mountain Preserve [NJ]. The boulders are the remains of igneous from the Jurassic period that has been modeled by erosion and weathering. These diabase boulders remained after softer rock was carried away. The area never experienced glaciers. This cluster is called the Devil’s Half Acre Boulders. I tried to focus on the large interesting shapes of the rocks and edited away much of the vegetation that distracted attention from the boulders themselves. Maybe this could be considered a rock portrait….ha, ha!

Thanks. In real life, these rocks really capture all the attention. I hope my painting did the same.
