Late afternoon in the dunes
This was based on a photo and sketches i've made on site. I still have the midge bites!!
I started with a raw sienna wash, overlaid with one in cerulean blue down the entire sheet, pulling out the sun with a scrunched up tissue. I then, when dryish, starting from the right far distant dunes with various mixes of cerulean and burnt sienna worked my way progressively forward, adding yellow ochre and then windsor yellow to the mix. For the darks I added indigo for distant trees and sepia for those in the foreground - inspired by Rowland Hilder. In the middle ground its a mix of both which neutralizes them out. I left some white on the sides of the trees and path.
I'm pleased how i managed to calmly work through this, as it can be rather stressy. Working wet on damp with a milky mix - there was minimum bleed. I wet the back of the sheet first. The distinctive horizontal branches on these fir trees is important to show. This was done with a size 2 and 0 rigger once everything was dry. Paper is Saunders Waterford Hot Press 300gm. Ive added some close ups as I think its interesting to see how this paper holds the paint. I dropped some raw cerulean into the tree trunks which you can see in one of them.

I see what you mean about the Hilder inspiration. There is a kind of yellow - grey warm/cool contradiction about some of his work that I can't describe, but I think you have captured some of that here.
