Thanks, Howard! I came upon Ian Sidaway on Instagram a couple of years ago and I truly appreciate both his sketch work, which he does a lot of, and his full paintings, both in watercolour and oils. I never thought about him and his work when painting this sketch, but apparently some inspiration has seeped in! And you're absolutely right about putting darker values into the trees where they meet the rooftops - will definitely do that if I were to paint a big one. Having a bit of a complicated health issue at the moment, so not painting at all, really, but hope to get back to it eventually.

Highly recommend it! Penzance itself may not be the most exciting of coastal cities, but the villages surrounding it, Mousehole, Newlyn and Marazion, are wonderful.

I agree, if you can get the masking fluid line thin enough, that is, using it sparsely. But what I like about Eric's scraping method is the broken line he achieves. Myself, I would probably take my chance on some gouache and a fine liner!

I used Adobe PhotoShop (Camera Raw to be specific) for this, but on Macs you can also use the included Preview app for a very quick auto adjust. iPhones do not do a great job, in my experience..

I really like the spontaneous, economical brush strokes in this. Your photo is very orange, but that might be on purpose, a burnt sienna tint? I suspect, though, that it might look a bit more like this in real life? (did a quick auto white balance on your photo). I like them both, has to be said :)
