Thanks for sharing this - a dramatic scene for sure. I'm in agreement with @Fi comments. The figure is important here - it helps to prevent the boat from looking as though it is stranded in the shallows, instead of making its way to shore through the surf. The darkest tone in your painting is the tope of the distant hills - compare this to the darks under the foreground waves - they are much darker. Keep this vivd tonal contrasts between light and dark in the foreground, and dial them down in the background to promote a sense of depth. There's some difficult perspective o the boat...but you've captured that well. Well done!

Haha! I looked at your painting first, and thought 'your lines and perspectives are all over the place!' Then I looked at the reference image and could see that they were well considered and accurate! What a fascinating assembly of buildings and shapes! If you had put a little less detail in the trellis panels to the right of the main shed then it would have given the shed more impact, but it's a painting that I've really enjoyed viewing....well done!

This is a lovely expression of a rugged day at the coast - sea breeze, waves smacking into the rocks, a lighthouse issuing the necessary warnings! It's evocative and I like it a lot!

What I like about this is that you have used your reference material to build up a composition through the use of simple sketches to help resolve your ideas. Well done! I like the final painting, but next time try to give more impact to your subject - the horse and driver. They are competing here with the trees on the left foreground and right , middle distance. Keep these more simple, with the use of soft edges to give the horse and driver greater prominence. It's a lovely moment though, well captured, and thanks so much for sharing.

It's an utterly charming scene and the soft glow on the snow really makes this look inviting. Well done with the composition too, with a well-placed snowman and the curved leading line taking us there. What a lovely downland scene Catherine, demonstrating a lot of skill. I feel that it is scenes like this where the watercolour medium comes into its own, catching fleeting moments of weather in the cool northern light that we have in the UK. I particularly like the light on the cloud which hints at the sun breaking through, catching field in the middle distance. Beautiful! It's a super painting Sam! Not difficult to be inspired by winter trees in Sussex lanes, eh?! The tree is wonderful and the description of light and shade falling across the different limbs in spot on., and gives it a strong three dimensional signature. You may have a point regarding the spikey foreground, but we both know that Sussex hedgerows are full of all manner of twigs an d growth like this. Perhaps just dialling it down by 50% on the left, and behind the tree would work well, but we're splitting hairs here. As someone who has been painting these landscapes for 30+ years, I'm sure that you're happy with how this has captured a moment in a landscape familiar to you....you should be! Recording these places and moments is proper landscape painting. Lovely work.

Thanks so much h for sharing this. It is such an interesting scene, and not an easy one to paint. I would have kept the background immediately behind the lighthouse almost devoid of detail, so that the building would pop out a little more. The foreground area is painted beautifully, as indeed are the background trees - you have achieved a perfect balance between detail and suggestion, which is not easy to achieve. Keep up the good work - you've captured the moment here, for sure! I'm intrigued by the inland lighthouse too....I assume this is right on the edge of the lagoon?

You have some nice light in the sky and frozen river, and I don't normally look at subjects with so many dark areas, as watercolour tends to work better at the lighter end of the tone spectrum, but your darks look nice and crisply defined without lots of messy overpainting, so well done.

It looks a lovely place, and thanks for sharing. Is there any specific wildlife that the sanctuary is known for? A technical point for you to consider - use a lot more water (and pigment) when you paint. The foreground area has a dry, scrubbed look to it, which wouldn't be the case if you were using much wetter washes

I really like this Paula - it's easy to be inspired by a walk on the South West Coast Path. The painting has really captured a moment, and I hope it allows you to revisit those memories. The stile, bridging the old wall works perfectly to invite us into the scene and you've nailed the colour of the sea thrift. Super work!

Your use of tonal contrasts here has created an attractive painting that has an engaging graphic quality to it. The flat lighting helps to promote the sense of a cold day, with the warm stone of bridge and building making a pleasing contrast. Nice work.

It's a lovely moment Thomas and easy to understand the inspiration. You have blended warm and cool colour temperatures beautifully but with restraint, which always plays out well in watercolour. You have natural feel for the medium - keep up the work!

There's an interesting story here and I can understand why this is inspirational - it's a group of buildings that invites a closer look and triggers the imagination - a perfect painting subject! It would be interesting to know your decision-making on the addition of warm colour. I like the light catching the end elevation, but I'm also quite taken by the dull, flat light too. One thing to think about...perhaps keep the horizon lower, similar to the photo and include fewer brushstrokes in the foreground area to promote emphasis on the buildings. Thanks for sharing this - it's nice to see a winter scene, and watercolour is the perfect medium for that. You've done well in handling the dark tones without them becoming muddy and losing transparency, which is not easy to achieve. If I was painting this scene I would keep the sky paler in tonal value to achieve a stronger contrast with the land, and consider using some broken brushstrokes instead of maskng fluid in places to create a more natural, broken edge to the areas of residual snow. Great work though.

Lovely work! With a significant interest in D-Day, I have a visit to the beaches on my shortlist, and it's nice to see your painting of the area. Yes, the sky could be a little fresher, but it still works well, and what I particularly like is that you've kept the reflections nice and quiet so they don't compete with detail on the foreshore.
