Scraping rocks

I’m trying to learn how to paint rocks using scrape method. So far, I mostly damaged paper :(

I had paper position flat and slanted (15 degrees) and I had missed and hit on both occasions so I’m not sure how to position my paper anymore.

I learned that I can’t have too wet puddle of colour, but then I risk of everything going dry too soon. I’ll start to scrape and most of the time I’m not able to finish by the time everything is dry. Am I just too slow? And still, I’m not sure what to do with pools of colours that happen when you scrape – do you attack them right away or when you scrape everything you want?

Also, I should have puddle full of colour (not too watery/thin/not sure about expression here?) and I found that if you are dealing with half-pans, it’s tricky. Almost in all tutorials artists use tubes of colour or pallets where they squeezed out colours so if anybody has advice on making a nice juicy puddle using half-pans I’m all ears.

Does anybody have some useful tip, advice and/or tutorial to decrease frustration with the process? Below are my latest attempts :)

Honestly I just tried it because it was part of the lesson and I admit that I'm not a fan. Definitely I'll rather learn how to paint them without scraping :)
