Copying other artists

ree

I was a little unsure early on as to whether I should copy other artists work. This was my 20th watercolour a couple of years ago and my interpretation from a painting in a book by Geoff Kersey. It turned out to be a great stepping stone to learning - the composition is already there, I worked out the colours, made sure the counterpoints and lost and found were all there and for an early painting I was more than pleased. At some point during lockdown I had a year of no painting and struggled to get back to this standard when creating entirely my own work. I then copied other landscape artists (such as Rowland Hilder - lamp black required!) pictures with different styles with a little more success - always more to learn
