How to go about water and reflections

Hi all, I'm fairly new to watercolour painting. I captured this nice autumn scene last year and have been trying to have a go at Painting it, with little success on getting the water and reflections correct, which leads me here to discuss with some of you...how would you go about painting this scene and what method of approach would you take?

The color in your photo is so rich that it might be difficult to see, but in a still body of water like this, the water is often darker closer up and lightens farther away from the viewer. So, when painting the gradient wash, I would turn my paper upside down to put the richest tone on and then carry it along to a lighter version as it approaches the reflections.
