Focal point in the middle distance

Still pretty new to painting landscapes in watercolor so if this is an obvious question, my apologies. I've learned and experienced that lighter tonal values, cooler colors, and soft edges recede into the distance and darker tonal values, warmer colors, and hard edges jump forward. How do you handle a focal point in a painting that is in the middle distance or far distance? If you warm/darken/hard edge it - it comes forward. Is the answer in composition of elements of the painting drawing the eye to the focal point?
