Paint Convincing Skies in Watercolour

Good evening all (morning, noon or night depending on where you are.) I need your help please.....

Over the last couple of weeks I have started work on my next series of YouTube tutorials - how to paint convincing skies in watercolour. Skies are one of the most important elements in a landscape painting: not only do they set the scene and establish the mood of the piece, but they are often the first area that you paint, and a well-painted sky does wonders for your confidence as you progress through the painting. I will be showing you skills that will enable you to tackle a wide range of different skies, from sunrise to sunset, good weather and bad. We'll be taking a look at ways to understand the structure of skies, how to design them to best suit our paintings, and useful pigments to help us achieve different effects.

This forum should be a two-way street and you can help me out by posting some comments on here to let me know the problems you have encountered when painting skies, so I can use those to help inform and refine my content . That way, as I release each video, I know that they are more likely to resonate and be useful. Of course, it goes without saying that I'll cover the perennial problem of how to avoid green skies!

I look forward to you input on this - and thank you.

What a great topic! I struggle with skies and this would certainly help me. The best I can do right now is to paint a flat or graded wash and use a tissue to wipe out clouds, sometimes not successfully either- I can't seem to get any gray tones in without messing something up. Without that grayish contrast my skies are just flat and boring.

Another thing I'd like to learn more about is light in the skies. Morning light, afternoon light and evening light are all so different, not only in sunset and sunrise but actual light. The colors make a huge impact on the painting and, I'd love to become more accomplished with that. There's not a lot of information or tutorials I have found to explain a deeper understanding of those color choices and application.

Thank you for an opportunity to learn more!
