Unlimited palette
This question was probably already asked here, but I coudn't find it. So if there is a thread, just send me a link and I'll delete this post.
But I was really curious - how much colors do you generally use on a painting when you have unlimited palette?
Limited palettes are a great practice, can be a show of great technique and fit a lot of scenes, to creat a coherent view. But how many colors and pigments people usually use to creat colorful, but still coherent painting? Do you stop yourself from using new type of red or yellow in mixing if you used already another one or when you dont limit yourself on purpose you use whatever you have on palette?
When I started painting again abd started use tube paints instead of pans I bought 5 colors. Slowly I raised it to 11 colors on my palette, with witch I xan mix most colors, but it also feels very same and limited sometimes. I'm tempted to buy more paints, but then I'm afraid I will just create incoherent and mussy messes with unnecessary additions.
Would also love to see some examples of very colorfull and color variant paintings with a breakdown of paints that were used, if someone willing to hustle.

I started with a limited palette of about 7 or 8 colours (Trevor's range below sums this up) and began painting the local landscapes ( trees, fields, rvers, fence post and skies). For me these colours seem to be sufficient to create what I wanted. Occasionally I'd buy a different tube of paint that I haven't had before and try it out but it never seems to fit and lies abandonned. The colour range that people use and the way they use them is part of their style, some use a wide range some use a limited range of colours and many astists's work is instantly recognisable by the colour range they use, as much as anything else. So my thinking is that it doesn't matter how many colours you have on your palette, you will use the ones you need and not those you don't. That is part of your 'style' and is deeply embedded inside you.
