Travelling with watercolour paint

What is the best way to carry watercolour paint (tubes and pans)when travelling especially by aeroplane? I'm thinking when going through security, do I put them in the plastic bag used for cosmetics and fluids etc or stow them in something else?

When travelling by air I tend to only carry a couple of sketchbooks, w/c pencils and a watercolour palette with my chosen w/c in pans that have dried. When I have travelled with tubes of w/c one brand burst (the lid may not have been screwed on correctly) and the mess was memorable. Not sure how jet/setting tutors manage they may also get a set of tubes when they arrive at their destination.
