Do I always need to create a thumbnail sketch/tonal study before painting?
Wondering if other members are creating thumbnail sketches/tonal studies every time they paint? To be perfectly honest I rarely create a thumbnail sketch or tonal study before painting. Generally I would roughly sketch out the scene on w/c paper and then paint directly over the sketch. Usually this works out ok especially if working from a good photograph. But, since I have stopped copying/watching tutorials I am getting into a lot of watercolour strife while painting. Those big decisions obviously need to be thought out before placing paint onto the paper.... a eureka moment for me as the answer could be in the sketch! It certainly seems like Olly and I am assuming Edo always create a thumbnail before painting. Interested to know what other forum members are doing?

Here is a graphite pencil drawing I did in one go from a photo. I like to work this way in painting too.
