Tactical query
Here is a picture taken recently of a local aspen tree.

Here is a practice version I painted.

My tactical question is this; if I paint the background as shown in the photo in a single large wash, my colors for the tree are likely to be muted. So is it best to try and paint around the tree with the understanding white paper will show through? It seems like a bad idea to even attempt to mask this. Do I paint the tree solid rather than dry brushing all the colors? What is the thought process on doing this against a darker background? Do you surrender to the medium and know it will not be brilliant?
All thoughts, ideas, suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

I have made an attempt to quickly sketch this wet on wet. Two tries, same paints, slightly different approach, but each time with the darker background as in the photo. If I was to do this myself I would probably change the background of the building though haha
See the wet in wet attached. Those were done by using transparent paints. If you were to use cadmiums, which are way more opaque, the result would be more vivid and standing out.
