Limited palette question

I’m struggling to fully understand how to use a limited palette. For instance mine contains a lemon, gamboge and ochre, French ultra, cobalt and cerulean, and pyrrol red, quin rose and crimson lake. Along with these primaries I have siennas umbers and paynes.

When creating a work can all of these colours work together to create a cohesive painting or should I limit only to warms or only to cools for instance. Or only one type of red and one type of blue for example.

In my first attempt at a painting with a limited palette I used a cerulean in the sky and ultra for the sea and to create colours for the rocks and it’s a hot mess! I’ve steered clear of such obvious differences in colour since but I’m still feeling quite confused!

I’m not sure if I’m getting my meaning across clearly but I’d love any help or examples you could give me please.
